Yoga As A Transformational Technology
I was a very hyperactive kid. Hyperactivity gave way to anxiety when I reached adolescence, and the mental health issues that I developed would persist in their most severe form until 2018, when I was 26 years old.

When I was 26, I started to consistently attend yoga classes. I was exposed to yoga philosophy and became fascinated. I went to live as a work-exchange student on a yoga ashram for 2 months, where we practiced yoga and meditation for several hours every day. I lived in a tent, sang and chanted with the other ashram residents daily, attended daily lectures related to yoga, and ate a vegetarian diet.

My life completely transformed. I went from being unable to control my emotions or behavior to being able to sit still in silence for extended periods of time. When I was younger, I was certain that I would be dead by the time I should be turning 30 years old. I am now 31, and I am more stable and peaceful than I ever thought would be possible for me. I am not perfect, but I have a kit of therapeutic yogic tools that are more helpful for me than anything else I have come across.

Blown away by the personal transformation that I experienced, I started to dive into the medical literature related to the practices of yoga. I have done countless hours of research into the neuroscience of mental health disorders and how yoga changes the brain. I found that yoga seems to basically reverse the brain changes that are associated with addictive disorders like opioid use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and binge-eating disorder. It is also useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, and numerous heart conditions. To read more about the positive brain changes and other benefits associated with the practices of yoga, please see the ‘benefits of yoga’ tab above.

I believe that yoga is one of the most powerful tools available to mitigate human suffering. I hope to dedicate my life to the practice of yoga and to bringing yogic tools - and the science that supports their use - to as many people as possible, especially those who need it but cannot afford it.
